Specialist Psychological Therapy in London
I provide evidence-based psychological therapy for professionals experiencing anxiety, burnout, depression, trauma and a range of related difficulties.
Therapy begins with understanding what is happening, how difficulties have developed, and the patterns that may be keeping them going. From there, we agree a focused way forward using approaches including CBT, EMDR, ACT and Compassion-Focused Therapy.
“Dr Joel Sheridan has helped me with anxiety and work-related stress. He uses a mix of techniques that are very effective in addressing a range of issues, including anxiety and depression, and in supporting both professional and personal life. I’m very grateful for the support and would highly recommend him.”

What Brings People to Therapy?
People often come to therapy when they notice patterns such as:
Persistent anxiety, worry or overthinking
Difficulty switching off or sleeping
Emotional exhaustion or burnout
Self-pressure, perfectionism or imposter feelings
Repeating difficulties in relationships
The impact of trauma or significant life events
Feeling low, disconnected, on edge or unlike yourself
Difficulties do not always appear suddenly. They can develop gradually, become familiar, and begin to affect work, relationships or everyday life before it is obvious how much they are costing you.
What Therapy Can Help With
Therapy can help you:
Reduce anxiety, rumination and unhelpful patterns of thinking
Understand what triggers and maintains difficult emotional responses
Respond differently to stress, uncertainty and pressure
Reduce avoidance and other patterns that keep problems going
Develop greater psychological flexibility
Improve relationships with yourself and others
Navigate difficult periods and major transitions more effectively
The aim is not simply to feel better in the moment, but to understand the patterns involved and make changes that are more likely to last.
How Therapy Works
My approach combines careful psychological assessment with evidence-based treatment. Sessions last 50 minutes.
You do not need to know which type of therapy you need before starting. The first stage is to understand the difficulties you are experiencing and develop a shared psychological formulation. This then guides the therapeutic approach and the focus of the work.
The Three Step Process
1. ENQUIRY
Send a brief enquiry outlining what you would like help with. I will reply within 48 working hours to let you know whether I am likely to be able to help and whether I have availability.
2. Assessment
Typically two sessions to understand your difficulties, how they developed, and what may maintain them. Together, we develop a shared psychological formulation and agree treatment.
3. Treatment
Therapy usually takes place weekly, particularly at first. We work on patterns identified in assessment, review progress, and adapt the approach according to what is most useful.
Therapeutic Approaches
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT examines the relationships between thoughts, emotions, behaviour and physical responses.
It can help identify patterns that maintain anxiety, depression and other difficulties, test unhelpful assumptions, and develop more effective ways of responding.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is an evidence-based treatment commonly used for trauma and distressing memories.
It helps the brain process experiences that remain emotionally charged, reducing their impact and allowing memories to be integrated more adaptively.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT focuses on developing psychological flexibility: the ability to respond more effectively to difficult thoughts and emotions while continuing to act in ways that matter to you.
It can be helpful when attempts to control or avoid internal experiences have themselves become part of the problem.
Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)
CFT is particularly useful where self-criticism, shame or a strong internal threat response are prominent.
It helps develop a more balanced way of responding to difficulty, while strengthening the capacity for reassurance, perspective and self-compassion.
